Auli Skiing in Uttarakhand

Auli Skiing

Moderate 4 Days 4.7 (920) 📍 Auli, Uttarakhand

About

Auli is India's premier ski destination and the best place in the country to learn — wide, forgiving blue runs at around 2,500–3,000 m in Uttarakhand, with the sacred peak of Nanda Devi watching over the slopes. Groomed runs, a mature ski school and a chairlift make it the natural first stop for new skiers.

What makes it special:

  • The best beginner skiing in India — wide blue runs, gentle gradients and a proven learn-to-ski school
  • Constant views of Nanda Devi, India's second-highest peak, across the slopes
  • A short, scenic chairlift and the Joshimath–Auli ropeway linking the valley and the runs

By the end of a five-day course most first-timers are linking turns on the intermediate slope — Auli is where Indian skiing starts.

Getting There

Auli sits above Joshimath in the Garhwal Himalaya. The nearest railheads are Haridwar and Rishikesh (around 250–270 km), from which it's a long but scenic 9–11 hour drive to Joshimath; the nearest airport is Jolly Grant (Dehradun), about 280 km away. From Joshimath you reach Auli by road or the Joshimath–Auli ropeway, one of the longest cable cars in Asia.

The ski season runs December to March, with the most reliable powder from mid-January to mid-February. Outside winter, the slopes are bare and the cable cars run only for sightseeing. Budget extra for gear rental, the ski school and slope meals beyond the package price, and keep a buffer day each side for the long mountain drive.

FAQs

When's the snow guaranteed? +
Mid-January to mid-February is peak — most reliable powder, all slopes operational. Late December is hit-or-miss. March is sunny but icy in afternoons. Outside December–March, there's no snow and the cable cars run for sightseeing only.
Is this good for absolute beginners? +
Best in India for beginners. Wide blue runs, forgiving gradients, and a mature 5-day learn-to-ski school (₹12,000–15,000) that genuinely gets first-timers linking turns. By Day 5 most people are on the intermediate slope.
How do I get there? +
Train to Haridwar (overnight from Delhi), shared taxi to Joshimath (~8 hours), cable car or road from Joshimath to Auli. Door-to-door from Delhi is about 24 hours — plan a buffer day either side. Some operators arrange Delhi-Joshimath car packages.
How much should I budget beyond the package? +
Gear rental ₹500–800/day (skis, boots, poles, jacket). Insurance ₹200/day (recommended). Ski school separate if you want lessons. Hot meals at the slope are ₹300–500/meal. Add ₹3,000–5,000 to the listed package price for a realistic 4-day trip.
Can I ski without lessons? +
Theoretically yes, but expect to spend three days falling and not progressing. The ski school fee is the single best money you'll spend on the trip. Self-taught skiing is a recipe for injury and frustration here.
