Dayara Bugyal & Dodital Trek
About
The Dayara Bugyal & Dodital Trek is one of Uttarakhand's most rewarding meadow-to-lake journeys, combining two of the Garhwal Himalaya's most scenic landscapes in a single adventure. The trail winds through ancient oak and rhododendron forests, crosses vast alpine meadows at Dayara Bugyal, and descends to the tranquil waters of Dodital, a high-altitude lake believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesha.
What makes it special:
- A rare combination of rolling alpine meadows, dense Himalayan forests, and a pristine high-altitude lake on one trek
- Endless grasslands at Dayara Bugyal with panoramic views of Bandarpoonch, Srikanth, Draupadi Ka Danda, and the Gangotri range
- The peaceful campsite beside Dodital, surrounded by cedar forests and rich local mythology
- It's one of the few Himalayan treks that blends expansive mountain vistas with a serene lakeside experience, making it perfect for trekkers looking for variety rather than a single summit.
Getting There
The trek begins from either Raithal or Barsu, two picturesque Himalayan villages in Uttarkashi district, about 180–190 km from Dehradun — a scenic 7–8 hour drive through Mussoorie (or Chamba), Chinyalisaur and Uttarkashi. Dehradun is the rendezvous point: Jolly Grant Airport and Dehradun Railway Station are the nearest air and rail links, both well connected to Delhi.
Most operators run a shared pickup from Dehradun early in the morning, ensuring you reach the base village by evening. The trail passes through protected forest under the Uttarkashi Forest Division, so a forest entry fee and trek registration are required at the check-post in Raithal or Barsu—these are typically arranged by your operator. Carry a government photo ID for registration, and note that drone flying is prohibited without prior permission.
