Gulmarg Skiing in Kashmir

Gulmarg Skiing

Extreme 2 Days 4.7 (880) 📍 Gulmarg, Kashmir

About

Gulmarg is India's premier ski resort and one of Asia's best — high-altitude powder, wide open bowls and serious off-piste terrain in the Kashmir Himalaya, all reached by Asia's highest gondola. It rises from the meadow at around 2,650 m to Apharwat Peak near 4,000 m, opening up runs that would be heli-skiing terrain in Europe.

What makes it special:

  • The famous Gulmarg Gondola — two stages climbing to nearly 4,000 m at Apharwat
  • Vast open bowls and off-piste lines off the Apharwat ridge for intermediate and advanced skiers
  • Beginner zones at the base and Phase 1, with deep, reliable powder through midwinter

This is a resort for people who already ski — wide-open, high-altitude terrain that rewards experience. If you're learning, start at Auli; if you can ski, Gulmarg is the prize.

Getting There

Gulmarg is in the Baramulla district of North Kashmir, about 50 km from Srinagar — a 1.5–2 hour drive via Tangmarg. Srinagar International Airport (SXR) is the nearest air link, well connected to Delhi and other metros; in winter, snow chains may be fitted beyond Tangmarg. Taxis run roughly ₹2,000–2,500 one-way from Srinagar.

The ski season runs December to March, with the deepest, most reliable snow from mid-January to mid-March. Phase 2 of the gondola is weather-dependent and closes in high winds, so check the day before. Carry a government photo ID (mandatory for the gondola), and for any off-piste, hire a certified local guide — Gulmarg's backcountry has real avalanche risk.

FAQs

When's the powder window? +
Mid-January to mid-March. Heaviest snow lands late January. Gondola operations depend on wind, so check forecasts the day before. April skis are slushy and limited.
How does this compare to Auli? +
A different sport. Gulmarg is for intermediate and advanced skiers — wide-open 4,200m bowls, serious off-piste, Asia's highest gondola. The Phase II gondola takes you to terrain that would be heli-skiing in Europe. Auli is for learning; Gulmarg is for skiing.
Do I need to be experienced? +
Yes. There are bunny slopes for beginners (Phase I area), but most of Gulmarg's appeal is wasted on first-timers. If you've done 2–3 trips at Auli or international resorts, you're ready. Otherwise start at Auli.
Should I hire a local guide? +
For off-piste, absolutely yes. Gulmarg has had avalanche incidents over the years involving skiers who went off-marked terrain unsupervised. Certified local guides know snow conditions, hidden cliffs, and exit routes. Worth every rupee.
Is the region safe right now? +
The ski circuit at Gulmarg has been continuously operational and stable for years. Operators and the J&K tourism department both keep the area secure. Check current travel advisories before booking, but the ski resort itself is one of the most-visited tourist spots in Kashmir.
