The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is Sikkim's ultimate high-altitude prize, a trail that takes you face-to-face with the third-highest mountain on Earth. Starting from the old capital Yuksom in West Sikkim, the route climbs through rhododendron forests, past Tshoka and Dzongri, all the way to Goecha La, the legendary viewpoint that stares straight at Kanchenjunga's sheer south face from across the valley.

Getting There

Yuksom sits in West Sikkim and is the starting and ending point of the trek. The nearest airport is Bagdogra, around 150 to 160 km away, roughly a 5 to 6 hour drive through the Teesta valley. Pakyong Airport near Gangtok is technically closer but has very limited flights, so most trekkers still fly into Bagdogra. The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about the same distance, with similar drive times to Yuksom.

The trek season runs from March to May for blooming rhododendrons and from September to November for the clearest mountain views. Winter months are brutally cold and best left to seasoned trekkers, while the monsoon brings leeches and landslide risk, so it is best avoided altogether. You will need both a Restricted Area Permit and a Protected Area Permit, sorted through your trek operator. Budget a buffer day on either end for the long mountain drive and keep your itinerary flexible since weather can shift plans fast at this altitude.

Do I need prior trekking experience for this one? +
Yes, and it's not optional. This isn't a beginner trail. The altitude, distance, and remoteness mean you should already have a multi-day high-altitude trek under your belt.

Two: the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit and a Restricted Area Permit. The restricted permit only works if you're trekking with at least one other person, so solo trekkers, grab a buddy.
Is a guide compulsory or just recommended? +
Compulsory. No guide, no permit, no trek. A porter is highly recommended, too since this region offers zero shortcuts on convenience.
What's accommodation like up there? +
