Kundalika Rafting in Maharashtra

Kundalika Rafting

Moderate 1 Day 4.5 (1,820) 📍 Lonavala, Maharashtra

About

Kundalika is the most popular white-water run in Maharashtra and one of the few rivers in India you can raft almost year-round. At Kolad in the Sahyadri foothills, water released each morning from the Bhira (Tata Power) dam turns a calm river into a frothing 14 km run of Grade II–III rapids — adventure on demand, monsoon or not.

What makes it special:

  • Dam-released rapids that run reliably outside the monsoon, unlike most Indian rivers
  • A punchy 14 km stretch of Grade II–III white water through lush Western Ghats scenery
  • An easy weekend hit from Mumbai and Pune, with swim and cliff-jump stops between rapids

It's a great first rafting experience — controlled, predictable water means operators can run gentle lines for beginners or more aggressive ones for the experienced.

Getting There

The rafting is at Kolad, in Raigad district on the Mumbai–Goa highway, in Maharashtra. It's roughly 120 km (about 3 hours) from Pune and 120–145 km (3.5–4 hours) from Mumbai — an easy self-drive or cab day-trip. By rail, Kolad has its own station, and Karjat is the other convenient railhead; many operators bundle pickup from there.

Because the run depends on the morning dam release (around 8–8:30 am), trips start early — operators sync the put-in to the water release, so reach the base on time. It runs through most of the year; monsoon (June–September) is the fullest and most dramatic, while October–February is calmer and more beginner-friendly. Bring quick-dry clothes, river sandals and a dry change for the drive back.

FAQs

When does Kundalika run, given it's not monsoon-fed? +
Year-round except heaviest monsoon weeks. Kundalika is dam-released — controlled water from Bhira Dam in the morning creates rapids on demand. Operators sync trips to dam release timings, usually 8am–12pm.
How does it compare to Rishikesh? +
Shorter trip (14km vs 16km), bigger and more sudden rapids (Grade III+ in stretches), and the Western Ghats setting feels jungle-river rather than mountain-river. Less iconic, more dramatic per kilometre.
Is it better for beginners or experienced rafters? +
Works for both. The dam release is controlled, so operators can run more aggressive lines for experienced groups or gentler lines for first-timers. Tell them which you are when booking.
How easy is it to reach from Mumbai or Pune? +
2.5 hours from Pune, 3.5 hours from Mumbai by car. Most operators bundle pickup/drop from Karjat railway station which is the easier rail option. Day trip from either city is realistic if you start early.
What should I wear? +
Quick-dry shorts and t-shirt. Aquasocks or sandals with heel straps. Bring a dry change for the drive back — you will be soaked. Forget cotton.
