Rishikesh River Rafting in Uttarakhand

Rishikesh River Rafting

Moderate 1 Day 4.9 (5,240) 📍 Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

About

Rishikesh is the rafting capital of India, and the stretch of the Ganga that runs past it is the country's most popular white-water run. Set in the Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand, the river offers everything from gentle splash-and-giggle sections to genuine Grade III–IV rapids, all finishing on the sandy beaches and ghats around Rishikesh.

What makes it special:

  • A run for every level — the beginner-friendly 9 km Brahmapuri, the classic 16 km Shivpuri, or the longer 24 km Marine Drive
  • Famous named rapids like Roller Coaster, Golf Course, Return to Sender and The Wall
  • A scenic Himalayan backdrop of forested hills and white-sand river beaches, with cliff-jumping and body-surfing stops along the way

It's the easiest serious adventure to reach in North India, and the reason most Indians do their first-ever rafting trip here.

Getting There

Rafting runs on the Ganga right beside Rishikesh. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant (Dehradun), about 20–22 km away — a 45–60 minute drive; the nearest major railhead is Haridwar, around 25 km, with Rishikesh's own station also on the line. Delhi is roughly 250 km by road, which is why it's such a popular weekend run.

Operators pick you up from their Rishikesh office and drive you upriver to the put-in point for your chosen stretch. The season runs from September to mid-June — rafting is closed during the monsoon (July–August) for safety. Water is fastest post-monsoon (September–October) and gentlest in spring (March–May). Wear quick-dry clothes and river sandals, and leave valuables locked up.

FAQs

Which stretch should I pick as a first-timer? +
16km Shivpuri stretch is the default answer for 80% of bookings. Grade III rapids (challenging but safe), 2.5–3 hours on water, finishes in time for lunch. Pick 9km Brahmapuri if you're under-confident or with kids; pick 26km Marine Drive if you've rafted before.
When does Rishikesh rafting actually run? +
September to June. Closed during monsoon (July–August) for safety. Water levels are highest in September–October (post-monsoon, fastest rapids) and most beginner-friendly in March–May.
Do I need to know swimming? +
No, but you should be comfortable being submerged. Life jackets keep you afloat, helmets protect your head, and the river will dunk you at some point. If water in your face panics you, do a confidence dunk in a pool first.
How risky is it really? +
Low when done with a vouched operator. The Shivpuri stretch averages one minor incident (overturned raft, no injuries) per few thousand trips. Risk goes up sharply with sketchy operators using old gear — which is the whole reason we vet ours.
What should I wear and bring? +
Quick-dry shorts/leggings and a t-shirt (no cotton on top). Aquasocks or river sandals (NOT flip-flops). Sunscreen — your face and shoulders get cooked. Leave phones and cameras locked up; GoPro mounts are usually rentable.
