Rock Climbing
About
Rock climbing around Bangalore is some of the best in South India, played out on the ancient granite hills of Karnataka. Within a couple of hours of the city, spots like Savandurga, Ramanagara, Anthargange and Turahalli offer everything from gentle bouldering to multi-pitch sport routes — compact granite, big domes and panoramic Deccan countryside.
What makes it special:
- Savandurga — one of Asia's largest monolithic hills, with dozens of granite routes
- Ramanagara — the granite domes made famous by Sholay, an internationally recognised climbing site
- Anthargange and Turahalli — volcanic-rock caves and a bouldering 'backyard' ideal for beginners
It's a rare mix where a total first-timer and a seasoned climber can both find their level on the same weekend, all within a short drive of the city.
Getting There
The climbing hills are clustered around Bangalore in Karnataka: Turahalli is barely 20 km out, Ramanagara about 50 km down the Mysore highway (it has its own railway station), Savandurga around 60 km, and Anthargange near Kolar roughly 70 km away. Kempegowda International Airport serves the wider region, and Bangalore is the obvious base.
Most sessions are guided day-trips — operators arrange gear (harness, shoes, ropes, crash pads) and transport from the city. The best season is October to March, with cool, dry mornings; avoid the monsoon (June–September), when the rock turns slick and climbing is unsafe. Start early to beat the midday heat on the exposed granite.
