About

The Roopkund Trek is one of India's most iconic high-altitude Himalayan adventures, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Famous worldwide as the "Skeleton Lake Trek," it leads trekkers to a mysterious glacial lake where centuries-old human skeletons emerge after the snow melts. Rising to an altitude of 5,029 metres, the trail passes through ancient oak and rhododendron forests, the spectacular alpine meadows of Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, and rugged mountain terrain beneath the towering Trishul and Nanda Ghunti peaks. The trek is physically demanding due to steep ascents, changing weather, and high altitude, making it ideal for experienced trekkers or fit beginners seeking a serious challenge.

What makes it special:

  • Mystery of the ancient Skeleton Lake.
  • Stunning Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal alpine meadows.
  • Panoramic views of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti peaks.
  • High-altitude glacial landscapes and snowfields.
  • Rich Himalayan flora, fauna, and ancient folklore.
  • Challenging summit day with rewarding views.

Getting There

Most trekking operators begin the Roopkund Trek from Dehradun or Rishikesh. Reach Dehradun by air via Jolly Grant Airport or by train to Dehradun Railway Station. From there, most trekking operators provide shared pickup service or you can travel by shared taxi or private vehicle to Lohajung, the traditional base village of the trek, a scenic 10–11 hour drive through Karnaprayag, Tharali, and Dewal. Some itineraries also use Wan village as the trekking start point, which is accessible by road from Lohajung. Accommodation is available in guesthouses and homestays before the trek begins.
