Sandakphu Trek
About
Sandakphu is the highest point in West Bengal and the only place in India where you can see four of the world's five highest peaks together. The trail follows the Singalila ridge along the India–Nepal border through rhododendron forest and tea-house villages, with the "Sleeping Buddha" panorama of Kanchenjunga unfolding as you climb.
What makes it special:
- A rare line-up of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu side by side at dawn from the summit
- Tea-house trekking — hot meals and stone-lodge stays each night instead of nightly camping
- Spring rhododendron blooms and the famous Singalila ridge walk toward Phalut
It's a beginner-friendly way to reach genuine high-Himalaya views without technical climbing — just long, steady days at altitude.
Getting There
The trek starts from Manebhanjan, a small town on the Nepal border about 90 km from Siliguri — a roughly 4-hour drive via Mirik and Sukhiapokhri. New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the nearest railhead and Bagdogra the nearest airport, both near Siliguri and well connected to Kolkata and Delhi.
The route passes through Singalila National Park, so a park entry permit is required, along with a state-registered guide — both are arranged at the forest office in Manebhanjan (operators handle this). For the clearest peak views, trek in October–November or March–April; carry a photo ID for the permit.
