Teesta River Rafting
About
Teesta River Rafting is North East India's white water classic, a Grade II to IV run cutting through the gorges where Sikkim meets West Bengal. The river starts cold and fast from Tarkhola, rolling down through Melli, Teesta Bazaar and Kalijhora, with the Himalayas rising on both banks the whole way down.
What makes it special:
- One of India's most accessible Grade II to IV rivers, with routes for total beginners and seasoned rafters alike
- Multiple stretches to choose from, Tarkhola to Melli for thrill seekers, Melli to Kalijhora for a calmer first-timer's run
- A border crossing on water, paddling along the line where Sikkim and West Bengal meet
Whether you are chasing your first rapid or your fiftieth, Teesta has a stretch with your name on it. This is where the East gets its adrenaline fix.
Getting There
Teesta River Rafting runs along NH10, between Teesta Bazaar in West Bengal and Melli on the Sikkim border. The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 1 hour 45 minutes away via Sevoke Road. The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), roughly 2 hours from the rafting points. Gangtok, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong are all within easy reach by shared jeep or taxi.
The rafting season runs September to June, with the best flow between December and June. Steer clear of the monsoon months, July to September, when the river runs too high and the rapids are too risky. Carry a change of clothes, sturdy shoes and a strong stomach for cold water, and book a stretch that matches your swimming confidence before you commit.
