Auli is the easiest skiing destination in India to learn at. The runs are wide, the gradient is forgiving, and the rental ecosystem is mature.

Here is the realistic, no-fluff walkthrough — getting there, gear costs, whether ski school is worth it, and how to plan your first week.

Getting there

Train to Haridwar (overnight from Delhi). Shared taxi to Joshimath (~8 hours, ₹500/seat). Cable car to Auli from Joshimath. Total travel from Delhi: about 24 hours door-to-door — plan a buffer day either side.

Gear rental cost

₹500–800/day gets you skis, boots, poles, jacket, pants. Helmets are usually included free. Goggles cost extra. Insurance is optional but recommended at ₹200/day. Total: budget ₹1,200/day for full gear + insurance.

Is ski school worth it?

Absolute beginner: yes, 100%. The 5-day learn-to-ski course at Auli is the best ₹12,000–15,000 you will spend.

By Day 3 you will be linking turns on the beginner slope. By Day 5 you will be skiing the intermediate run. Without instruction, you will spend 3 days falling and not progressing.

Timing it right January to mid-February is peak. December is hit-or-miss for snow. March is sunny but icy in the afternoons. Plan around the first week of January if you want guaranteed powder.
